Carb-conscious diets

Carbohydrates are a major group of nutrients that include sugars, starches, and fiber.  Sugars are known as simple carbohydrates. Starches and fibers are complex carbohydrates.  Carbohydrates provide about half of all energy needed by tissues and muscles and are the primary source of energy for the body.

The central nervous system relies almost exclusively on glucose for energy!  CHO is also important to help the body use fat efficiently.  When fat is burned for energy without any CHO present, the process is incomplete and could result in ketosis – a condition that can cause severe dehydration.  It’s essential to eat a diet rich in carbohydrates by including a selection of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
