Allergies

Allergies

Allergies involve the immune system and food allergens, the food components that cause allergic reactions, are usually proteins.  These proteins cannot be broken down in preparation, cooking, by stomach acids or enzymes.  When the food allergen enters the stomach, the body recognizes it as foreign and quickly produces powerful antibodies to stop the assault.  As the body fights the allergen, symptoms begin to appear.

These symptoms can occur immediately after the body is exposed to the food allergen or they may take a couple of hours.
Symptoms may include:

  • Hives or a rash
  • Swelling in the throat, lips, tongue, or face
  • Difficultly breathing including wheezing and coughing
  • Intense cramps (especially stomach)
  • Anaphylactic shock:  this is a severe rare allergic reaction that involves a number of body parts simultaneously.  In an anaphylactic reaction there are signs that include difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat and mouth, a quick drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness.  Anaphylaxis must be treated without delay.

Peanut/Nut Allergy

If a person is known to be allergic to one type of nut they are usually advised to avoid all nuts.  Nuts can be hidden within ingredients and are used in many foods, including cereals, crackers, condiments like barbeque sauce and ice cream.  It’s important to check with manufacturers of products and read labels.   Allergies must be taken seriously.

Peanut Allergies are quite prevalent and although peanuts are a legume, they are usually cleaned and manufactured in the same facility as other nuts so there is a risk of cross contamination.

Jugo Juice has gone to every effort to ensure that the following products are peanut free:  Smoothies, Iced Teas & Lemonades, Grilled Wraps and Flatbread Paninis .

Milk Allergy

When someone has a milk allergy they have an immune reaction to the protein in milk.  It is advised to avoid all products that contain even the smallest amount of milk.  Luckily milk is one of the easiest ingredients to substitute.  Soy Milk and Rice Milk are tasty alternatives.  Lactaid™ still has the milk protein Casein and must be avoided in an allergy.
