July 15th, 2006 - Get the skinny on antioxidants
Antioxidants are superior vitamins and minerals that bind free radicals (the bad guys!) in the bloodstream and help prevent oxidation (breakdown) to the cell membrane. Specifically, antioxidantss are vitamins A, C, E and the mineral Selenium (ACES).
Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals and help to rid them from the body. Free radicals arise during regular metabolism. Pollution, radiation, pesticides, herbicides and cigarette smoking also generate free radicals. Free radicals are like destructive tornadoes, causing damage wherever they go!
The beneficial and valuable effects of fruits, vegetables and grains in fighting degenerative diseases have been attributed to the plethora of antioxidants they offer. Eating a wide variety of tasty fruits and vegetables in ample amounts every day will ensure you get all the defensive antioxidant powers.
Foods rich in antioxidants are:
- Oranges, peaches, cantaloupe, carrots and sweet potatoes
- Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and grapes
- Pomegranates
- Nuts and grains
- Broccoli and leafy greens
- Tea, wine and even chocolate!
