Native to India, the mango is said to be the most commonly eaten fresh fruit worldwide and has earned the title ‘king of fruit’. Evidence shows that the mango was first cultivated more than 4000 years ago, and it is now widely grown in tropical climates throughout the world, including India, Southern and Southeast Asia, South and Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Australia.
Mangoes grow on trees (similar to pistachio and cashew trees) which grow to an average height of 50 feet and are each capable of producing about 100 mangoes per year. The fruit takes from three to six months to ripen, and is then harvested and shipped around the world. Our season for fresh mangoes is from April to September, but June and July offer the best choice and best prices. Buying the fruit ‘in season’ also means getting great nutritional value – mangoes are very high in Vitamins A, B, and C.
